About Us
Mary Barlow started Mountain Top Hiking Club in 2001. She had started hiking in the Coachella Valley that winter and wanted to keep going when she moved back to the mountains that spring. So together with Barbara Levering from Crestline, Jim and Jackie Manning from Running Springs, and Bill McConnell from Big Bear, along with local Sierra Club members, they started organizing and leading Wednesday hikes. The Mountain Top Hiking Club was active for 16 years. In 2017 Sandy Mishodek assumed the leadership of the Wednesday hikes from Barbara Levering. Contact Sandy at [email protected]. In 2021 Christine Smiley started leading hikes of various lengths and difficulties on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Contact Christine at [email protected]. Monday hikes are usually shorter, easier hikes of approximately 3 miles. Wednesday hikes are moderate, from 3 - 6 miles long, but not for novices. Friday hikes can be up to 10 miles long and sometimes may require a car shuttle. Be aware of physiological changes in higher elevations (5000-7500 ft.). Our hikers range in age from 20 to 80+ years. We usually break for a snack midway during the hike and at times can count on a hearty lunch in a congenial atmosphere afterwards. Other hikes in the area are led by the Sierra Club.
